A weird thing I saw on my hens' combs last fall turned out to be a real problem

I noticed a few of my girls had these small, grey, scaly spots on their combs and wattles. I thought it was just dirt or maybe a weird scab from a pecking order squabble (you know how it is). I almost ignored it, but after about a week it spread to three more birds. A quick search and a call to my local feed store in Springfield convinced me it was fowl pox. We had to isolate the sick ones and treat their sores with iodine for nearly a month. Has anyone else dealt with a fowl pox outbreak and found a good way to keep the rest of the flock from getting it?

Call your local vet instead of the feed store next time. I've seen way too many people misdiagnose fowl pox when it's actually something way more treatable.

Oh man, fowl pox is the worst. I spent more time playing chicken nurse than I ever thought possible.

Bet @kelly.daniel's right about that, but even with a vet it's a long road.
