Rain pants felt like a waste of pack space until my first day on the Olympic Coast

I hiked 8 miles in constant drizzle and stayed bone dry while my buddy in jeans was soaked through by mile 3. Has anyone else had a piece of gear completely flip their opinion after a single trip?

My husband fell through the ice on a creek behind our house a few years back. He was only in up to his waist but the water was freezing. We got him inside quick and had him strip down, then wrapped him in a heavy wool blanket and had him sit by the wood stove with hot tea. Took a good hour before he stopped shivering, but he was fine once he warmed up slow and steady like that.
