The inspector in Decatur told me my attic insulation was doing nothing, and my July power bill proved him right
Had a guy come out in March to look at our attic before we listed the house. He poked around for ten minutes and said the insulation up there was basically flat, about R-11, and we were just heating and cooling the whole neighborhood. I figured he was just trying to sell me something. Our July bill hit $287, which is nuts for a 1,500 sq ft ranch, so I finally listened. We blew in another 10 inches of cellulose for $1,400 and August came in at $178. Same thermostat settings, same family, same brutal Georgia heat. Now I want to know if the crawl space is the next thing slowly bleeding us dry, has anyone dealt with that here?
I'd slow down before calling the crawl space the next problem. Air sealing matters way more than people admit, and if your attic hatch and can lights are still leaky, that new cellulose is doing half its job. I paid $400 for a blower door test in Marietta and it showed 3,200 CFM of leakage, most of it from the attic floor and a dead flex duct in the crawl. Fixing that leak cost me less than another round of insulation and dropped my bill another $30. Get the test first, then spend.
