I grabbed 10 bags of that discount cedar mulch from the big box store last spring, and it was full of weed seeds that went crazy by June. Ended up paying a landscaping crew $400 to pull everything and redo the beds with proper stuff. Anyone else get burned by bargain mulch in the Atlanta humidity?

Man, I gotta push back on this one hard. That bagged mulch from the big box stores is basically sterilized sawdust, so if you got weeds, that's almost certainly coming from the wind, birds, or the dirt underneath, not the mulch itself. I've used that cheap stuff for years in Georgia and my beds stay clean as long as I lay it thick enough, like 3 inches minimum, and put down a weed barrier first. Sounds like the real issue is you skipped the prep work and then blamed the mulch for your own shortcut. Also, $400 for a crew to rip out some weeds and redo beds? That's on you for not just grabbing a hoe and spending a Saturday afternoon. Next time, check your soil first and stop blaming the bargain bin.
