Spent 4 hours trying to get a clean soil sample from a waterlogged trench

The trick was using a turkey baster to slowly draw out the water first, something I only found in a 1987 field manual. Has anyone else found a better tool for saturated sediment?

Ruby494 has a point about the wide tip. But a cheap syringe seems like it would clog with silt or small gravel pretty fast. What do you do when the sediment is more than just mud?

Honestly that sounds like way too much work... a simple plastic syringe from the pharmacy works better and costs less than a dollar. The turkey baster tip is too wide for real precision anyway.
