A close call with my cousin at the cliff dwellings made me rethink family outings
We visited some ancient cliff dwellings on a family trip last fall, and my little cousin decided to climb on a low wall to get a better look. I turned my back for a second, and he had a loose piece of pottery in his hand that he picked up from the ground. A guide rushed over and told us that even touching artifacts can erase clues for archaeologists. Now I make sure to set clear rules with any relatives before we step onto a historical site. It's easy for kids or even adults to get excited and forget these places are fragile. I share this because one thoughtless moment can damage discoveries that belong to all of us. Always keep your group together and remind them to look but not touch. That experience stuck with me, and I hope it helps other families avoid similar scares.

Doubt that one touch ruins anything. Archaeologists deal with way bigger issues than a kid holding pottery.

Oh please, that guide overreacted big time. So a kid touches some old pottery shard, it's not the end of the world. Those clues archaeologists talk about are probably long gone already from weather and tourists. People get so uptight about every little thing, it sucks the fun right out of a family trip. Let the kid be curious, that's how they learn. If we treat every historic spot like a sterile lab, nobody will care about history anyway.
