Overheard my neighbor say worm bins are a waste of time for apartments

I was taking my compost bucket down the hall and heard a guy in 4B tell his friend that apartment composting, especially with worms, is pointless because you only get a cup of dirt. He said it's better to just toss scraps in the green city bin. I've had my worm bin for eight months now, and I get about a pound of castings every six weeks. That's enough for my balcony herbs and a friend's plants. It's not about the amount, it's about closing the loop right in your own home. Has anyone else had to defend their small-scale setup to people who don't get it?

Read a blog post once where someone called worm bins a "quiet protest" against waste. That stuck with me. Your neighbor just sees the dirt, not the point.

Did he ever actually try a worm bin, or is he just guessing? (Because a cup of dirt sounds like a setup problem.)
