Always thought the 'torque stripe' thing was just for show.

A lead at my old hangar in Tulsa made us do it on every single bolt, which felt like extra busywork. Then last month, I caught a loose engine mount nut on a Cessna 172 during a pre-flight because the paint line was off by maybe an eighth of an inch. The nut was already a full turn out. Now I get it. Has anyone else had a simple visual check save them from a bigger headache?
