Update: I tried that trick with the heat gun on a tempered pane and it didn't crack... it just got weirdly soft.

Tempered glass is supposed to shatter into small pieces if you mess with its surface tension. The softening you saw is a major red flag. That means the tempering process was likely incomplete or flawed from the start. I had a similar thing happen with a shower door panel last year, it just warped under heat instead of breaking. That glass wasn't safe.

Yeah, @the_vera is right about the bad tempering. That warping means the glass didn't get cooled fast enough, so it never built up the right internal stress. It's basically just regular annealed glass at that point, which can break into big, sharp pieces. Definitely not something you want in a door or shower.
