Had to pick between a 4-inch and a 6-inch core barrel for a sandstone sample in central Utah. Went with the 4-inch.

Genuinely curious, is the core size that big of a deal for sandstone? It's not like you're drilling for oil. A 4-inch piece should show the layers and grain structure just fine. Seen plenty of solid papers use smaller samples from way harder rock. This feels like overthinking a basic field choice.

Smaller barrel means less weight to haul out, man.
