My uncle told me to never use a tack cloth on raw wood before staining, and I finally saw why on a walnut table last week.
Ignored his advice once, and the finish got all cloudy and weird because the cloth left a residue that sealed the grain, so has anyone found a better way to prep the surface besides just blowing it off with air?

My buddy Jake had the same problem on an oak desk. He switched to a slightly damp lint free cloth and it worked way better.

Yeah, that tack cloth residue is the worst. @ryand26 is right about a damp lint free cloth, but I also give it a quick wipe with mineral spirits on a rag right before the stain.
