Remember my buddy who sanded a whole deck by hand before buying one?

Tell you what, start with a higher grit than you think you need. It's way too easy to dig in with that orbital and leave swirl marks you can't get out. I learned that the hard way on a tabletop, had to go back and redo the whole thing. Let the tool do the work, just guide it.
