Honestly, I always thought those 'wipe-on' poly finishes were just for beginners or quick fixes.
Ngl, I was super skeptical. A client insisted on it for a maple table I was doing last month, said they wanted a hand-rubbed look. I figured it would be too thin and not durable at all. But after building up 8 coats over a few days, sanding lightly with 400 grit between every other coat like the can said, the finish is incredibly smooth and has a really nice depth. It's not as bulletproof as a sprayed finish, sure, but for the right piece it's totally legit. What other 'shortcut' products have you guys been surprised by?

It's still just a wipe-on finish at the end of the day. Building eight coats sounds like a lot of work for a shortcut method. I doubt it holds up like a real finish would.

Agree, that many coats defeats the purpose of a wipe-on.
