TIL I was bidding projects all wrong for 3 years straight
I used to just guess on my freelance web dev bids. Like I'd look at the project and throw out a number that felt right. Turns out I was undercharging by like 40% on average. Last month I finally started tracking every single hour on a project in Toggl. Now I know my real rate is $65/hr not the $45 I was asking before. Has anyone else had that moment where they realized their pricing was way off based on actual data?

Wait, you mean pulling numbers out of thin air isn't a solid business strategy?

Mary, what kind of numbers were they pulling? I've seen guys make up costs on a job before and it always falls apart when you try to actually pay for materials. Did they get caught red-handed or just leave everyone scratching their heads?
