Started using a cheap laser thermometer to check ladle temps

We were getting cold shuts on some medium sized gear castings, and my buddy said to try a $40 one from the hardware store. Spot checking the ladle lip before each pour cut our scrap rate by half last month. Anyone else use something simple that fixed a big issue?
