Had a core shift on a big gear blank at the old Hamilton plant last Thursday

We were pouring a 400 pound steel gear and the core moved about an inch and a half just before the metal set. My foreman, Jerry, told me to hit the riser with an oxygen lance to keep it open while he got a backup ladle ready. We ended up adding another 50 pounds of metal to feed the cavity and it actually saved the casting. Has anyone else had to do an emergency feed like that on a big job?

Emergency feed" sounds like a risky band-aid to me.

Ever wonder why they push it so hard? I used to think it was a solid backup plan too, but then I saw what happens when people rely on it. It doesn't fix the real problem, it just kicks it down the road. Now you've got the same issue plus a system that's stressed from the emergency fix. Seems like asking for more trouble later.
