Been pouring iron for 15 years and my old ladle finally gave out

The handle cracked right in the middle of a pour last Tuesday, sent a wave of molten metal splashing across the floor before I managed to set it down safe. Had to borrow a beat-up backup from the shop next door and it felt totally wrong in my hands like wearing someone else's boots. Anybody else got a tool that just feels like an extension of your arm after years of use?

Fifteen years with the same ladle and it picked the worst time to quit. Hope your boots are still in one piece at least.

Are you REALLY sure it was the tool that was "wrong" and not just your head being all shook up from the close call? I've had the same thing happen and honestly I think half the "feel" of a favorite tool is just the comfort of knowing it's safe and familiar. You dropped a ladle of molten iron and that backup probably saved your bacon that day, even if it felt clumsy. Sometimes we get so attached to the old tool we blame the new one for everything, but a cracked handle mid-pour is a pretty clear sign it was time for a change anyway.
