Why does nobody talk about the power of a good flower bucket?

I was at the market in Portland and heard a vendor say they keep their dahlias in a specific type of galvanized bucket for 24 hours before arranging. I tried it with my own stock and the stems were so much firmer. What's your go-to bucket trick for hydrating tricky flowers?

Galvanized buckets can actually be toxic for some flowers, so maybe try a food-grade plastic one instead.
