Just realized how much the prep work has changed since I started
I was at the supply house and overheard a young installer say he never uses a belt sander on a slab anymore, just a planetary grinder. I remember spending a whole day on a 400 square foot job with my old 3-inch belt sander, my arms feeling like jelly. Now you can rent a grinder and do it in a couple hours with way less dust. Makes you think about all the old ways we used to kill ourselves. What's one tool or method you used to swear by that's totally outdated now?

That bit about the belt sander on a slab really hits home. I used to swear by a manual floor scraper for pulling up old vinyl. It was a brutal workout, and you'd always miss spots of cutback adhesive. Now a small walk behind scraper does the same room in a fraction of the time without destroying my back. It's wild how we just accepted that pain as part of the job.

Honestly, I felt the same way about mixing thinset by hand. I was convinced it gave me more control until I finally tried a good drill mixer. The consistency is perfect every single time and I save so much energy for the actual install.
