After 3 years I finally ditched my pre-cut studs for a circular saw
Last weekend I was framing a 8x10 shed for my neighbor Dave in Portland and kept fighting with studs that were 1/4 inch too long or short. Pre-cut studs at Home Depot cost me $4.50 each but I spent an hour shimming every single one. Switched to cutting my own from 16 footers and saved $35 on the whole job plus the walls actually sit plumb now. Anyone else find that pre-cut lumber creates more problems than it solves?

Pre cut studs are a total scam for anyone who actually cares about their walls being square. I did the exact same thing last year on a garage addition and never looked back. The price difference adds up fast when you figure in all the time wasted fighting with shims and making trips back to the store. Plus you end up with less waste because you can cut exactly what you need from the long boards. The only downside is hauling 16 footers around but honestly that's nothing compared to having to fix crooked walls later. Once you start cutting your own you realize how much the big box stores mark up the convenience factor.

@ivan40 nailed it, the time you save from not shimming makes it totally worth it.
