Fixed a squeaky door for 6 months before I realized I was lubing the wrong part
I was spraying WD-40 on the hinge pins every 3 weeks like clockwork, thinking the noise was coming from metal on metal. Last Tuesday I actually watched the door move and saw the top hinge screw wiggling loose against the frame. Anyone else ever focus on the obvious spot and miss the real problem staring you in the face?

3 times out of 5 with my old truck it was the same dance. I would pop the hood and stare at the battery terminals thinking that was the reason it wouldn't start, turned out the ground wire had corroded clean through under the chassis where I never looked. People do this with relationships too, they blame the loud arguments when the real problem is that tiny thing their partner stopped doing years ago and they never noticed. It is like the brain picks the easy target first because fixing the hinge pin feels productive even when it does nothing. You treat the symptom instead of the cause because the cause is usually in some awkward spot you have to bend over backwards to see.
