Appreciation post for my 1993 house inspection checklist
I found my dad's old home inspection checklist from when he bought his first house in 1993, and it's literally a pencil and paper list of stuff like 'check for knob and tube wiring' and 'look at the basement floor for cracks.' These days I use a full digital app with thermal cameras and moisture meters, but I wonder if we overcomplicate things now.

The thermal camera is nice but it won't tell you if that old drain line is just barely holding together after a freeze. Sometimes a good flashlight and poking around beats all the fancy gear.

Honestly, "check for knob and tube wiring" is pretty funny because that stuff was already outdated by 1993. Most houses built after the 1950s didn't have it, so it was already a weird leftover from older checklists. Your dad's list is simpler but that specific item shows they were still working with old habits, not that everything was easier back then.
