Am I the only one who thinks you don't need a special airlock for kombucha?

I fermented a gallon batch in a regular glass jar with just a cloth cover for 8 days, and it came out perfectly fizzy and tart. Everyone says you need that fancy setup, but my simple method in my Phoenix kitchen worked fine. Has anyone else skipped the airlock and gotten good results?

Right, patchen gets it, my cloth-covered jar always works fine too.
