Rant: My neighbor's kimchi overflow made me rethink my whole airlock setup

I was helping my neighbor in his garage in Portland last month when his 5 gallon kimchi crock burped and sent brine all over his workbench. He was using a cheap plastic airlock that clogged. I've always just used a loose lid for my sauerkraut, but seeing that mess made me switch to proper weighted glass lids. Has anyone else had a ferment go from calm to explosive that fast?

Honestly, that sounds like a setup problem, not an airlock problem. A proper airlock with the right water level shouldn't clog like that. I've used the cheap ones for years without a single explosion.
