Shoutout to the guy who told me my post hole digger was too small
I always thought bigger was better for post holes, but a 6-inch auger left me with loose gravel fill that settled after a rain. A 4-inch bit on the same Toro saved me 30 minutes per hole and the fence has been solid for 6 months. Anyone else find that smaller tools actually work better in rocky soil?

Buddy of mine tried a 6-inch auger in his rocky soil and spent all afternoon fighting it... ended up renting a bigger machine just to finish. Next time he used a 4-inch with a hand tamper and said it was night and day difference.

Hang on, is this really a make-or-break thing for a fence? I used a 6-inch auger in rocky clay last summer and my posts haven't budged an inch. Maybe your gravel was just too loose to begin with, not the auger's fault. Honestly, swapping bits to save 30 minutes sounds like a minor win, not a game changer. Seems like the soil type matters way more than the tool size.
