Warning: Ditch the cheap rasps and get a Nichols or else you'll regret it after the third horse

I switched to a Nichols rasp after fighting with a $12 hardware store rasp that kept glazing over and taking forever to finish the hoof, and the difference in speed and smoothness was night and day. Has anyone else noticed how fast the cheap ones lose their bite?

Got a cheap rasp once and it was like trying to file a hoof with a brick. It's not just rasps either that's the thing. I've noticed this with a lot of tools and gear where the cheap version costs you more in time and frustration than the good one saves upfront. Like with knives or even kitchen shears you buy the cheap set and they're dull in a month but a decent one lasts years. It's just smarter to pay a little more once than keep buying the junk over and over. What do you think is the worst "buy cheap buy twice" item out there?

Used to be the guy who bought the cheapest version of everything thinking I was being smart with my money. Then I grabbed a set of those dirt cheap screwdrivers from a hardware store and stripped the head of a screw on the first try. Ended up spending more on a replacement screwdriver and had to deal with the headache of getting the stripped one out. Really changed how I look at tools now. For me the worst offender has to be those bargain bin power strips. Had one start smoking after a year of light use and that was the wake up call I needed.
