My anvil stand cracked after 5 years of heavy forging, and I think concrete blocks are fine for most setups.

Last month the 3/4 inch plate my anvil sat on split right down the middle from all the hammering, but instead of buying a fancy steel stand I just stacked two solid concrete blocks under it and it's been quieter and more stable, anyone else gone cheap on the foundation?

Didn't Mark Aspery say something about how the anvil needs a solid base that absorbs the shock without bouncing back too much? Concrete blocks actually do a decent job of that since they're dense but not springy like some steel stands can be. For the price of a free curb find or a few bucks at the hardware store, I think it's a no-brainer for most smiths.

Wait, are you saying concrete blocks actually work better for an anvil base than steel stands? I've been using a stack of old pavers under my anvil for like two years now and it seriously deadens the ring way better than the metal stand I had before. For like $5 at the habitat restore I grabbed a stack of those big 12x12 concrete pavers and bolted my anvil to a thick piece of wood on top. The whole thing sits solid as a rock and barely transfers any shock to my floor.
