Bought a fancy $40 putty knife set and my old $5 one still works better

Picked up a three piece set at the hardware store last month because the handle on my old putty knife was cracking. These new ones flex weirdly and the metal feels too thin. I went back to taping the old handle. Has anyone else had brand new tools just not perform as good as the beat up originals?

Got a different take on this. Maybe the old tools were made in an era when cheap metal was still decent and the manufacturing tolerances were tighter. These new ones are probably cranked out as fast as possible with the cheapest materials to hit a price point, even at $40. I mean, the old $5 knife might have been made when the company actually cared about the product instead of just moving units off a shelf. Idk, maybe it's just me but vintage hardware store stuff sometimes just hits different.

Oh come on, you're telling me a $5 knife from some random hardware store back in the day was actually built better than a $40 one now? That's wild if true. I guess it makes sense though, companies really did take pride in their stuff before everything became about cutting costs.
