A client's stubborn redness cleared up after I changed my steam timing

I had a regular client with skin that always got red and angry during extractions, no matter how gentle I was. On a whim, I cut my usual steam time from 8 minutes down to just 3 minutes before starting that part of the facial. I read a short blog post from an esthetician in Austin that suggested this for sensitive types. The difference was huge, her skin stayed much calmer. Has anyone else had good results with shorter steam times for reactive skin?

My old spa manager insisted on a full ten minutes of steam for every single facial, like it was some holy rule. I followed it for years, probably turning half my clients into steamed lobsters before I finally questioned it. Cutting it down to just a couple minutes for my sensitive clients was a total game changer. I felt like a real dummy for not trying it sooner. What other old school rules have you guys tossed out the window?
