Spent 3 years greasing guide rails wrong until a old timer set me straight

I always packed the grease thick on the rail face thinking more was better. This 30 year veteran at a job in Des Moines pulled me aside and showed me a thin film is all you need, the excess just gets slung everywhere. Has anyone else been doing it wrong for years without knowing?

So wait, did he show you where the grease actually needs to go instead of on the face, like on the side or interior channels somewhere? That's wild how long you can go just assuming you're doing it right lol.

Actually, the channels are usually on the side of the brake pads themselves, not the caliper interior. You've gotta put the grease right on the metal backing where the pad slides, not on the friction material at all. I messed that up for years until a mechanic buddy showed me. Just a thin smear on the edges is all it takes, otherwise you're just scrubbing it all off the first time you brake.
