Just faced an ethical call on vintage elevator brakes

I was servicing an elevator from the 1960s last month. The safety brakes were worn but still passed the basic tests. The owner didn't want to spend on new parts unless absolutely needed. I knew the brakes could fail under rare but possible conditions. Signing off felt like hiding a future problem. But forcing an upgrade might shut down a vital service for elderly tenants. It's a call that keeps me up at night, honestly.

Yikes, that's some horror movie opening scene stuff right there lol. So your choices were basically 'maybe send an elevator full of seniors into freefall' or 'be the guy who cuts off their only way down'. Real talk though, that's a messed up spot to be in, getting stuck between a broke owner and a death trap. Guess the only upgrade worse than the brakes is your job becoming a moral panic attack.
