Shoutout to the guy at the Milwaukee tool repair counter

I was fixing a busted M18 drill and told him I was just going to swap the whole motor. He asked to see it, pointed at a tiny bit of carbon dust on the brush, and said 'Clean that with a pencil eraser first, it's free.' I did it right there and the drill fired up like new. Has anyone else had a simple fix save them from a full part replacement?

Cleaning carbon off the brushes is a classic fix that works way more often than people think. I keep a plain pink eraser in my toolbox just for that. Always check for loose wires or a dirty switch before you assume the motor is dead. Saves a ton of money and a trip to the store.

What about the commutator, do you clean that too or just the brushes?
