A client in Portland asked why I bother fixing old radios at all

He said 'it's just a box of noise, get a new one' while I was aligning the IF cans on his 1960s Zenith. It hit different because I realized he saw the static, but I saw the whole history of broadcast tech in that chassis. Made me think about how we explain value beyond just function. How do you guys talk to customers about why a repair is worth it, not just possible?

Honestly, it reminds me of a guy who brought in his granddad's old manual typewriter. He just wanted it cleaned up to look nice on a shelf. After I got the keys unstuck and showed him how it worked, he spent an hour typing a letter to his sister on it. He said it felt more real than an email. That's the part you can't explain with a price tag. It's about the feel of a thing that was made to last, and the connection to how people used to do things. Fixing it keeps that thread alive.

But it's still just a thing on a shelf most days. People get caught up in the story, not the actual use. Most old stuff gets fixed once then forgotten again.
