My trick for fishing wire through finished walls without opening drywall

Had a job last month in an old house in Portland where I needed to run a new circuit to a third floor bedroom. Chasing it through the existing pipe was impossible and I didn't want to cut 10 holes. Tried using a fiberglass rod with a magnet taped to the end and a strong magnet on the other side of the wall. Worked way better than I expected on the first try. Anyone else use magnets to guide wire through tight spots?

Yeah "powerful magnet can pull things loose" is real, I had a buddy who was trying to fish a wire in his garage and his magnet yanked a whole pipe hanger right off the joist. He spent the next hour trying to get it back on while holding a flashlight in his teeth. That old knob and tube stuff is sketchy enough without adding more trouble.

You might want to be careful with strong magnets near old knob and tube wiring, some of those old houses still have it and a powerful magnet can pull things loose.
