I was reading a random library book about the history of pencils and found out they used to be worth a fortune

It was a book from the 90s in the local library's 'odd facts' section. It said that in the 1600s, a single high-quality graphite pencil could cost the equivalent of a week's wages for a skilled worker (which is wild to think about now). Anyone know of other good books with surprising little facts like that?

A week's wages for a pencil? Was the lead made of gold or something?

The graphite came from a single mine in England.
