I used to mock the painter's tape crowd, then my baseboards proved me wrong
For years I just free-handed trim work because I figured tape was for people who couldn't hold a steady line. Last month I finally repainted the living room baseboards in my 1950s ranch and got bleed everywhere, spent an extra afternoon scraping paint off the wood floor. My neighbor came over, handed me a roll of 3M blue tape, and made me watch him tape along the carpet line before I touched a brush. I did one test section with tape and one without, the taped edge was clean in one pass versus my usual two coats plus cleanup. Now I tape every straight edge in the house, it takes five minutes and saves me at least an hour of fixing mistakes. Anyone else resist the obvious fix for way too long just because it felt like cheating?

Honestly the thing that got me was realizing tape isnt about being scared to paint, its about respecting your own time. I used to think masking was for beginners until I timed myself doing a door frame and then timed a taped one. The tape version was faster even with the taping included because I wasnt redoing strokes or hunting down bleed spots. What nobody talks about is the psychology, freehanding feels like a skill flex but its really just gambling with your afternoons. Once I accepted that the tape is a tool, not a crutch, my corners got cleaner and my mood got better. Now I keep a roll in the truck for when clients ask about touch ups, saves me from lying about how I get straight lines.
