TIL my drywall patch job doesn't need primer to look good
I fixed a small hole in my living room and painted right over the mud. It blended perfectly and I didn't have to get more supplies, so now I skip primer for all minor fixes. What do you guys think, is primer a must or can we do without it sometimes?

Hey, careful with that advice. The mud soaks up paint differently than the wall around it, so even on small patches you can get a shiny spot that shows through later. I learned this the hard way when my "perfect" repair started flashing under certain lights after a few weeks. A quick coat of primer seals the patch first and avoids that problem.

I used to be super strict about using primer on every patch job. Your post actually changed my view on this. Last week I fixed a tiny hole and tried painting straight over the mud like you said. It looked totally fine and saved me a trip to the store. Maybe the rules aren't as hard as we make them out to be for small repairs.
