The mud pan is not a mixing bowl, people.

I keep seeing guys try to mix a full bag of compound in a 12-inch pan, and it's a mess every time. I learned the hard way on a job in Phoenix when my pan bent and sent a glob right onto the homeowner's new rug. What's the weirdest place you've had to clean up a mud spill?

What kind of rug was it? I dropped a whole pan off a bench once, straight into an open air return vent. Took me an hour to dig it all out before the boss showed up.

Straight into an AIR RETURN? That's a new level of bad luck. I can't even imagine trying to scoop wet mud out of a duct. At least my rug disaster was on the surface. You must have been covered in dust and compound by the end of that.
