I used to think patching a ceiling was just about slapping some compound on and calling it a day. But after renting for years and dealing with this exact problem, I've learned that the prep work is what actually matters. If the original stain or water damage is still there, the patch will just keep coming back no matter how good the mud job looks. You have to kill the mold or seal the stain first with something like a shellac-based primer, then use mesh tape not paper tape, and give each layer plenty of time to dry. In a humid place like Tucson, stuff dries fast but not always evenly, so you really need to wait. I'd say sand it smooth between coats too, otherwise the new patch will crack right along the old lines.

Wait, is patching a ceiling really that deep? Like, I get the shellac thing if there's a serious water stain or mold, but most people just need to cover a screw hole or a small crack from a door knob. Sealing every little spot with shellac primer seems like overkill unless the stain is actively bleeding through. And mesh tape vs paper tape? I've used both and honestly, for a tiny patch, it doesn't matter much. Drying time in Tucson is the real wildcard though, that part's true, but sanding between every single layer? That's for people who want a flawless mirror finish, not for a rental you're gonna get your deposit back on. Maybe it's a pro vs. weekend warrior thing, but I've seen slap-and-dash patches hold up for years.
