Mid-dredge pump failure at Smith Lake taught me a new routine

Last Tuesday my cutterhead pump seized up right at 2pm on Smith Lake. I was 40 feet deep in muck and the suction line just quit. Had to haul everything up, clear the impeller by hand, and it took 3 hours to get back running. Now I check my hydraulic oil temp every hour on the dot. Anyone else got a story about a pump dying in the middle of a job?

Three hours to clear the impeller by hand" sounds like a real good time. I bet you named that pump something nasty after that. Nothing like a surprise mud spa treatment to spice up your Tuesday afternoon.

Man that first one I hit with mud I called it the Swamp Thing for like six months. Three hours is rough though, I've been there with a clogged trash pump and my back was shot for two days after. There's something about kneeling in muddy water while trying to scoop out rocks that just makes you question all your life choices. At least you got it cleared, some guys would have just bought a new one.
