Honestly, I used to think running the cutter head at full tilt was the only way to move material fast. Then my foreman in Mobile pointed at the fuel gauge after a 12 hour shift and said 'You're burning money, not mud.'

Yeah, that's a lesson you only learn once. I watched a guy melt a pump seal trying to push too hard.

Oh man, that's so true! I saw the exact same thing happen at my last shop. A new guy was in a rush and just kept cranking the pressure way past spec. The whole seal gave out in a cloud of nasty smoke and the smell was awful. It shut the line down for a full day while they cleaned it all up and replaced everything. That image of melted rubber is burned into my brain forever. You really do learn to respect the limits after seeing something like that.
