Spent 3 hours chasing a mystery taste in my $1.25 spaghetti sauce and it was the can itself
Opened a can of the 99 cent marinara from Dollar Tree and it tasted weird, like metal and old pennies. Added garlic, oregano, a spoon of sugar, nothing worked. Took the pot apart twice, scrubbed it, still there. Turned out the dented can had been sitting near the register at the store on 5th Street. Anyone know if dented cans from the dollar aisle are safe or should I just toss them?

Yikes, that penny taste is a real thing and it means the can lining failed. I read a while back that acidic stuff like tomato sauce eats through the plastic coating inside cans, and once that happens the metal leaches in. A dent can break that lining too, or let in air if the seal gets weak. Store shelves by the register are the worst spot because people bump them and temp swings hit them all day. For a buck twenty five, just toss it, it is not worth the risk of getting sick over sauce.
