Dollar store tortillas beat the name brand ones for tacos
I stopped at the Dollar Tree off I-35 in Austin last Tuesday because I needed tortillas for chicken tacos and didn't feel like driving to H-E-B. Grabbed their store brand flour tortillas for $1.25 a pack, figured they'd be thin and rubbery. They actually held up better than the $3.50 ones I usually buy, no cracking when I fold them, and they warm up soft on a dry skillet in under a minute. Also picked up their taco seasoning packets, which taste close enough to the fancy stuff for a fraction of the price. The only miss was the salsa, watery and too sweet, so I stick with a can of diced tomatoes and jalapenos next time. Has anyone else found a dollar store staple that beats the regular grocery version, or is it mostly luck depending on the location?

The part about the salsa being watery and too sweet got me laughing because I made that same mistake with dollar store ranch dressing a while back. I grabbed a bottle for a cookout and it poured out like skim milk, just this sad white liquid that tasted like nothing. My cousin still gives me a hard time about it every time we grill. The weird thing is their spices and dry stuff seem fine, it's the wet stuff in jars that lets you down. Maybe it's because liquids sit on the shelf longer and the cheap ones don't have the same stuff in them to keep fresh. Anyway your tortilla find makes sense to me, the dry goods are where the deals hide.
