Can we talk about dollar store canned chili? I avoided it for 2 years and finally caved last week
I always walked past the canned chili at Dollar Tree because something about meat in a can for $1.25 felt like a bad bet. Last Tuesday I was broke and hungry around 9pm, so I grabbed two cans, a bag of rice, and a block of that shelf stable cheese for about $4 total. I dumped the chili over rice, added cheese, and honestly it was solid, not great, but way better than I expected for the price. The texture is a little mushy and it needs hot sauce, but for a meal that costs less than a coffee it does the job. I'm curious if anyone has a trick to make it less soupy, because mine came out thin. Also does the chicken version hold up better than the beef? I'm hesitant to try it without a second opinion.
Isnt this just how we treat everything cheap until we get desperate enough to try it? I did the same thing with frozen burritos from the dollar store, passed them up for years like they were poison, then ate four in one sitting during a rough week and felt fine about it. For the soupy thing, try draining some of the liquid before you heat it or let it simmer uncovered for a few extra minutes so it thickens up. The chicken one is fine but it tastes more like salty soup than chicken, so go in with low hopes and you'll be okay.
