Vent: My neighbor said to use regular drywall in my basement bathroom

He told me it would be fine since I was just putting up a shower curtain, but after six months the wall behind it is soft and moldy. What's the right material to use for a basement bathroom wall, and how bad is the fix going to be?

Nah, that's a total gut job. Regular drywall acts like a sponge in a damp basement. The paper backing just soaks up moisture from the air and spray. You need mold resistant drywall at the very least, the green or purple stuff. Honestly, cement board behind the tile is the right way. That soft wall means the studs might be wet too. Gotta cut it all out, dry everything, and start over.

Man, that's rough. So you've got mold and soft drywall already. Have you checked how far up the wall the damage goes, or is it just behind the shower curtain? That's going to tell you a lot about how much you need to tear out.
