The day I learned drywall isn't a snack for my dog
Used to just leave leftover joint compound buckets sitting open in the garage until my lab mix ate half a cup of the stuff and I spent $300 at the emergency vet. Now I seal every bucket with two layers of tape and a brick on top - has anyone else's pet gotten into construction materials around the house?

The part about your lab eating drywall compound really got me. My golden retriever once got into a bucket of spackle I left open. I started putting all my joint compounds and powders in those locking storage totes you get at the hardware store. The heavy duty ones with the clip on lids. That plus storing them on a high shelf kept my dog out of trouble.

And yeah, @perez.thea is spot on about locking totes - my buddy actually had his husky chew through the corner of a plastic bucket to get at some leftover mortar mix. I switched to those heavy duty totes too, but I also started keeping a spray bottle of bitter apple nearby as a backup (that stuff tastes awful, trust me). Another thing nobody brings up: your dog might not just eat the drywall compound, they might lick the dust off your tools while you're mid-project. Caught my pup doing that with a drywall knife once.
