Update: My old way of painting trim was a total mess compared to using a paint shield
I used to just tape everything off and hope for the best, which always left me cleaning up jagged lines for an hour. Last weekend, I grabbed a basic 2-inch paint shield from the hardware store for about five bucks and it was a game changer. I did the whole living room baseboard in my apartment in under thirty minutes with super clean edges. Has anyone else found a simple tool that saved them a ton of time on a basic job?

Oh man, paint shields are the best! I had the same exact problem with my door frames. I used to spend forever with tape and still mess it up. I got one of those angled shields and it made everything so much faster and cleaner. It feels way more controlled than just a brush, and you don't have to wait for tape to dry. Such a simple thing but it totally changes the job.

Right? I used to be so bad at cutting in that I'd just paint the trim and then go back and re-paint the wall. Every single time. My old place had these wavy lines next to all the baseboards, it looked like a kindergartner did it. The shield doesn't lie to you, it just gives you a straight edge. I still have a roll of tape that's probably fossilized in my garage from my pre-shield days.
