PSA: My first attempt at floating a bathroom wall went all wrong

I tried using the 1/4 inch leveling system from Harbor Freight and ended up with a 3/8 slope toward the shower drain after 2 days of work. Took me 4 hours to tear it out and start over with shims. Anyone else had bad luck with those clip systems?

Those clip systems are really hit or miss. The Harbor Freight ones particularly are NOTORIOUS for flexing under the weight of the wall board. A lot of people don't realize you have to prep the subfloor with a chalk line and level compound before you even start.

The Homelite ones from Lowe's are actually worse about flexing. I watched a guy on YouTube do a test with a 3/8" sheet and the Harbor Freight clips held up to 185 lbs before breaking, but the Homelite ones snapped at like 130. @fiona_fox56 is right about the prep too, but nobody talks about how the type of board matters. Regular drywall handles different than the lightweight stuff. Lightweight is more brittle and puts uneven pressure on those clips.
