My paint sprayer clogged halfway through a bedroom ceiling in Charlotte yesterday

I bought a cheap HVLP sprayer from a big box store to paint my bedroom ceiling. Got about 20 minutes into spraying the second coat when it just stopped putting out paint. Turned out the tip was completely gummed up because I didn't thin the paint enough. I spent an hour taking it apart and cleaning it out with mineral spirits. Has anyone found a good way to prevent clogs when using thicker paint?
