My grandpa's coffee can trick for painting trim (he used an old Maxwell House can to hold the brush) beats any $9 painter's tool I've bought
I used to tape every edge and still got paint on the glass. Then I remembered watching my grandpa paint window trim back in 1992. He kept the brush in a coffee can with just enough paint in the bottom to cover the bristles. He said you only dip about a third of the brush and drag it slow. I tried that on my front room trim last month with a $4 can of flat white and a 1.5 inch angled brush. Zero tape. One tiny smear on the wall. My wife noticed the difference before I even told her what I did.
Anyone else have an old school trick from a family member that beat the new stuff?

Keep the brush in the can and skip the tape. Grandpa was right. Less paint on the brush means less mess on the glass.

My dad tried painting the living room without taping once and ended up with a two inch green stripe on the white ceiling. He spent the whole next day up there with a razor blade and a rag, cursing up a storm. Learned his lesson the hard way, that man. @amyb54 is spot on about keeping it light on the brush too, my grandpa always wiped his bristles on the rim before he went near the wall. Half the battle is just not loading up like you're frosting a cake.
